“Can you draw happiness for me Abidin?” Nazım Hikmet’s famous quote; defining , or as in the quotation ‘drawing’ , Innovation has become quite significant in business world. Managers indicates that Innovation one of the firsts in their agendas. Even ‘Innovation’ is one of the most Googled words about business life. However, we do not know the definition of the innovation in detail.
We discussed with our team and thought : “If we say that innovation is our thing, we need to explain it briefly in our blog.”
What is Innovation?
It can be defined as developing a new product , service or business manner which provides the advantage of competetion for an organisation. The word “Innovation” is known in Turkey for 10 years. It is an English word and it corresponds the words “creativity” and “regeneration” in Turkish language.
• It does not contain product solely; it also contains existing business manner, innovation of organisation and styles of launching the product and service to the market.
• The change that is made has to have a market value,an economic success, in order to name it as “Innovation”.
• It is not enough just to think new things , it is also important to put those new things into practice.
• Technology is not limited with inventions, changes in business manner can also have innovative results.
“Creativity is thinking up new things. Innovation is doing new things.” – Theodore Levitt.
When we look at the history, Innovation always existed; because technological and scientific progress, consequently continuation of life, would not be possible without Innovation and understanding of Innovativeness. Popularity of the concept of Innovation in corporations is derived from companies’ obligation to produce different products and services fast, in order to be competetive as the techonological progress and globalization require. Moreover, Gen y got involved in the business life and this requires change in the work culture.
Gen y starts their own business or prefers collective work, thus this forces big companies to work like Start-ups. This is how the concept of Intrapreneurship came out. Employees that work flexible, be innovative, that are Intrapreneurs.
Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg , they are all succesful and ground-breaking people with their original and new ideas . Thier innovative intelligence is a huge reason for their success along with the innovative systems in the countries they live in.
Goverment corporations have started to include Innovation culture and develop their competincies to their policies. We want to share our knowledge and experiences about Innovation Management with managers and employees.
